Footprints in the Sand Prayer

The Footprints in the Sand Poem is not only a poem but a prayer for so many of us when we are walking through our darkest time.

There are so many bible verses that coincide with this poem that we can use to pray over our situations and circumstances along  along with the poem itself. I can’t tell you how many times when I was at the darkest points of my walk with God that I literally pictured Jesus picking me up and carrying me across the sand.

Below is the poem that has encouraged all of us at one point or another to trust and know that our heavenly Father’s words of never leaving us nor forsaking us is truth. We can stand and pray knowing that he is faithful and just and is no respecter of person.

Footprints in the Sand Prayer

One night I dreamed I was walking
along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed that
during the low periods of my life, when I was
suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,”You promised me
Lord, that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods
of my life there have only been
one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?”

The Lord replied,
“The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints,
is when I carried you.”
