Footprints in the Sand Bible Verse

One of the most asked questions I’ve seen online has been, “What is the Bible Verse for Footprints in the Sand?

Footprints in the Sand is actually a poem and not a Bible verse. Although there are many bible verses that could have inspired the author to write this poem, there is not just one verse that relates to this poem…there are many!

In my quest to find that one bible verse that could shed some light on this poem I was so encouraged by the many verses of scripture that can give us so hope such as this treasured poem has.

To know that no matter what, no matter where, no matter when, Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). In the good times he walks right beside us and in the bad he carries us. We are never left alone in this world. We may be in it but we are definitely not of it. (John 15:19)

Following are some of the best bible verses that best depict what is happening in the Footprints in the Sand Poem.

Matthew 11:28 ~ “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

When we are going through some of our most trying times where we are weary and just feel like giving up, our father gives us rest. In this rest we can rejuvenate our strength with his words and get back up refreshed and ready to battle again.

Deuteronomy 1:31 ~ “and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

I can just imagine the millions of Israelites in the wilderness, walking hours and hours at a time with their little ones getting tired. As a mom I’ve had my children get tired of walking and I’ve scooped them up in my arms where they laid their head on my shoulder and went to sleep. Any of you moms and dads that are reading this right now relate? This is what the father does for us when we are tired. All we have to do is climb up in his lap and lay our head on his chest. Rest will come.

Deuteronomy 33:27 ~ The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you, saying, ‘Destroy them!’

Oh how I can just picture God speaking to my enemies and driving them out from my presence all while holding me in his arms.

Isaiah 46:4 ~ Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

Psalm 77:19 ~ Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.

I would have to say this verse comes the closest to the Footprints in the Sand poem.

Psalm 55:22 ~ Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

When you can learn to truly cast your cares over to the Lord I can attest to the fact that you will be able to walk through your greatest trials and tribulations without being shaken and actually have a joy that is unspeakable.

2 Samuel 22:2-3 ~ and David said, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior – from violent people you save me.”

Whom shall we fear when we have God as our rock, our fortress, our deliverer, our comforter, our shield, our help in times of trouble? There is no one or any thing we should ever fear!

Although the Footprints in the Sand Poem is not one particular bible verse it does help us to realize that God will never leave us but will carry us through our most darkest days.

  1. That bible verse “In the good times he walks right beside us and in the bad he carries us. We are never left alone in this world. We may be in it but we are definitely not of it.” (John 15:19) really hit me, but I looked it up and it’s not the correct verse, please find the real one I’d love to know.

    1. Hey Chris, sorry it has taken this long to respond but I had company this past week and didn’t visit the computer that much.
Are you looking for the correct verse about not being of the world or about God walking beside. I know that Psalm 23:2 says that “He Leads us beside the still waters” so we know he does walk beside us. I don’t think there is a specific verse that states “he walks with us in the good times and carries us in the bad.” I know there is a song that comes to mind by Phillips, Craig & Dean, ‘You are God Alone’ that has those lyrics in it.
Also in looking up these scriptures for you I came across Psalm 139 that drives home the point that God knows everything about us and the love that he has for each of his children. Let me know which one you are trying to find and I’ll do my best to find it.
Thanks for stopping and commenting also. I appreciate it so much!

      1. Oh ok, it was a song.. Thanks so much for clarifying. Is there any other verse close to “He walks with us in the good times and carries us in the bad?”

    2. Please edit and correct your verse for John 15:19 is NOT what the Bible says.
Also, keep Hebrews 13:5 in context…you can’t just cut the verse in half and pick and choose what words of the Bible you want to apply to your life. The footprint poem is not theologically sound and neither is this post, it would seem.

      1. I believe you can pick and choose which words you take and apply to your day to day life. I do it every morning, it serves me very well and has for 45 years. I’m 52 now and I know Jesus loves me.
Give it a try, what’s the worse that could happen?
Keep Jesus in your heart and judge not.

  2. The foot prints in the sand prayer has always been important to me even when I was walking the furthest away from God that prayer sustained me. I am a recovering Alcoholic and God chose this prayer to bring back to him through my recovery. He is a forgiving God!

    1. Amen to that Stu, that is an awesome testimony!!! I know what you mean about this poem sustaining you in the darkest moments. It has done the same for me when I was at the most hopeless time of my life. I always envision myself in the arms of Jesus as the angels fight the darkness off of me. He is such a forgiving God and one that loves us so much.
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your story. It means a lot to me and brings a smile to my face.

  4. Deuteronomy 1:29-31 “Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”

    1. Nancy,
Thank you so much for giving the entire verses for Deuteronomy 1:29-31. I love the beginning where God tells them not to be terrified or afraid because he will save them just like he saved them in Egypt. What a powerful verse for us to hold on to when it seems like the waves of life are about to overtake us. They can’t because we serve the God of the storms and a Daddy who protects his children.

Isaiah 41: 10 so do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

  6. Hello Audrey,
I am writing what I hope to become my testimony. Having very little education my grammar and punctuation and spelling is not very good. I came across your web-site having tried to find Bible Scriptures that related to Footprints in The Sand and it has guided me to you.
Would you know of any-one who might help me to write this story with me.
    Many Blessings
    Angela
If you would like to look at my out-line of my testimony I can send this to you …

    1. Good Morning Angela,
I love to read your testimony! To hear what God is doing in the lives of other brothers and sisters in Christ is such a faith builder. unfortunately, I don’t have any experience in helping others write their stories and don’t really know anyone I could recommend. I do know that if you are on Facebook, I’m part of a Women’s Christian Entrepreneurial group that I believe has publishers and editors within the group. Here is the link to the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/christianwomanentrepreneur/ You might just find the perfect match to what it is God has put on your heart to do.
If you’d like to send me your outline I can give you my feedback as a reader of books and a marketing expert.

      Be Blessed,
      Audrey

  7. Thank you, Audrey, for this post. I thought of looking up footprints in the sand because of a death in the family. While I thought this whole time that it was a Bible verse and not a poem, reading the Bible verses was really helpful. God bless!

    1. You are so welcome Grace. There truly are so many scriptures that refer to the Lord carrying us along during the most trying times. It’s a huge comfort to know that He never leaves us nor forsakes us.
      Be Blessed,
      Audrey
